Gratitude Friday – I Dream That I Am A Cabbage

I dream that I am a cabbage.
I find an unloved piece of land
and I begin to plant:
two rows of cabbages, and then
I fill the woolen earth with more
seeds. Carrots, potatoes, squash, wheat.
They grow taller, I tend them gently, at night
I sleep in a bed of soft leaves.
When they are ready, my little cabbages gather their silk dresses
and begin to walk. They each find another
piece of earth, hidden in cities or empty fields,
they begin to plant.

I love this so much. My favourite part is the silk dresses of the cabbages and the image of them beginning a new round of planting, spreading the seeds. You’ve neatly contrasted a very unglamourous vegetable with a mythic journey of beauty and mysticism. Elegant and beautiful writing.
Emmalina,
Thank you! I really did have this dream, and had to write it down. I absolutely love that I was a cabbage – such a humble and yet incredible vegetable. What more could we want?

Such beautiful words, and I love that picture.
Just so you know, I have been trying to leave comments here for weeks, and this is the first time that it has let me. I have, however, been loving everything that you have been writing about.
Heather,
Thank you – always so nice to hear from you! And how weird about the comments not working for you. Thanks for letting me know!
A dream turned poetry! And the photo is pretty. Is that forsynthia (sp?)?

my computer ineptitude is requiring me to “post” instead of just write you an email! so, hello everyone! adrie – i was just wondering if there was any grain/seeds/beans that i could buy from the last harvest? we want to buy a 2010 share but we are also interested in having some of that stuff sooner. i don’t know. just wondering if there was stuff left to buy not necessarily in the farm of a “share”. and if not, any suggestions of where else to buy locally grown grains, seeds and beans and as well as mixed animal feed. we have chickens and goats. we’ve bought from lakeview organic in the past and may do so again but just wondering what some other options are. if you know of any. thanks!

Nicola,
Yes, we’re busting out all over in forsythia here! Thank you so much for your kind words – I always get nervous posting poetry, so it’s especially appreciated.
Best,
Adrie
Anna,
We don’t have any leftovers, everything was divided among the shareholders. Cliff Hatch at Uppingill Farm may have some wheat left from last year – we’ll be announcing 2010 share signups soon through the mailing list ( you can join at localgrain.org if you’re not on yet), and I definitely anticipate it to fill very quickly. Sorry I can’t be of more help sooner!
Best,
Adrie
I love this poem. I love that you are changing the world both in the daytime and in your dreams. What a glorious thing to be, a cabbage, so delicious, so versatile, so long-storing, so beautiful!
You are, always, the sweetest. Thanks!
