good eats
One of the things I’m most excited about making once we get our grain and bean share (and it’s hard to pick, believe me!) is warm breakfast cereal. I grew up eating oatmeal, and also cheese grits, but I recently discovered other whole grain cereals. Man are they yummy! Bring on the cracked grains in the morning (with my personal favorite addition – heavy cream). Yummy.
Not to torture us all too much, but we often get asked for good recipes to use whole grains in. My two favorites so far are these books -

These two books are great resources for cooking and eating whole grains, both by themselves and in other dishes. Lorna Sass also has a new book, Whole Grains for Busy People, which I haven’t looked at yet, but it’s probably great. Also, this delicious Crockpot Breakfast Risotto can be found online – yummy. Someday soon, when we’ve got our own rice paddy, we can even have homegrown rice, breakfast and dinner. Happy eating everyone!

Making whole-grain oatmeal can be very easy. We use two methods. Use 1/4 cup of oats with 1 cup of liquid (either straight water, or half water and half milk) per person. Start either method before you go to bed.
1. Bring the liquid to a boil in the top of a double boiler. Add oats, salt, raisins, etc. Let it come to a boil again. Then set it on the other half of the double boiler (having already heated the water in it). Let it sit overnight and it will be ready to eat in the morning!
2. Combine all ingredients in a jar or pot that fits inside your crock pot. Add just enough water to the crock pot to come up to the level of the liquid in the oatmeal. Put it on low and enjoy hot oatmeal when you wake up.
It’s really easy, and it works for whole oats (like we’ll be getting) or for steel cut oats.
Enjoy!

Thanks Seth! Hope we’ll get lots of chances to share recipes.
I love the first book you mentioned. Whether I cook right from it, or adapt something I find within, I really think it’s a gem of a book to have in a kitchen.
I totally agree! Thanks for chiming in!
Thanks for two more books to add to my wishlist! What an inspiring site you have.
Thank you Sarah! Thanks for coming by.
